Chapter 23: Ten Minutes Back

Greg's POV

I was on my knees on the wet tile before I knew I had moved.

"Ma'am, my name is Greg. I'm a paramedic. I need you to listen to me for one minute."

The woman in the chair nodded fast.

Her husband was beside her with his hand over his mouth.

"Sir," I said. "Call 911. Say these words exactly: cord prolapse, thirty-eight weeks, Dublin, the salon on Bridge Street. Say you need a medic unit and the hospital to be called. Go."

He had his phone out before I finished.

"Kira," I said.

"Here."

She was already beside me.

"My truck's unlocked. Back seat, the red bag. And the box of gloves in the door pocket."

She ran.

I turned back to the woman.

"I'm going to get you out of the chair and onto your knees. Your chest goes down on the seat, and your hips go up. It takes the weight off the baby. Do you understand?"

"Is she going to die?"

"No." I said it with everything I had. "Not today. Not in my hands. Come on."

I took her under the arms and lowered her myself, and she went onto the vinyl on her knees with her head on her folded arms.

Behind me, Lacey said, "Greg."

I did not turn around.

"Greg, listen to me." Her voice was high and fast. "Wait for the ambulance. They'll be here in ten minutes. If you put your hands on her and something goes wrong, they'll blame you. They'll say it was you. You can't do this again, you know you can't."

I knew exactly what she was doing.

She had done it to Rhonda, and she had done it to me, and for two years I had believed she was right.

I put my head down next to the woman's ear.

"I'm not leaving you," I said.

"Please don't."

"I'm right here."

Kira slammed back through the door with the red bag.

She tore open the gloves and held them out, and I snapped on a pair.

"Hold her hand," I told her. "Talk to her. Say anything."
