Chapter 8: Two Things
At four in the morning a woman came into the waiting room with a seven-year-old boy holding his wrist.
She stopped in front of my desk and her face lit up.
"Oh my God. You're her. You're N."
"I'm Anja," I said. "What happened to his wrist?"
"He fell off the monkey bars at the gym. Are you the napkin lady?"
She already had her phone up.
The red dot was blinking.
"Ma'am, I'm going to ask you to put that down."
"Kasper says you're having a breakdown." She said it kindly, with her head tilted. "He posted an hour ago. He says you stole his work and you're not well."
The waiting room had twelve people in it.
All of them were looking at me.
My hands were steady on the desk, and I noticed that with some surprise.
"Here is what I can do," I said. "I can look at your son's wrist right now, and I can get him an X-ray in ten minutes."
"Okay."
"Or you can film me, and I'll ask the charge nurse to put you at the back of the line."
"That's not fair."
"No," I said. "It isn't fair to anyone in this room. Choose."
She put her phone away.
I knelt in front of the boy and took his wrist in my hands.
"I'm Anja. Can you wiggle your fingers for me, buddy?"
He wiggled them.
"Good. That's a brave wrist."
An old man in the corner started to clap, slowly.
Then a woman in scrubs said, "Leave her alone, she's working," and the room went back to its coughing.
The charge nurse caught my eye from the nurses' station and raised her coffee mug.
