Chapter 18: Tell Them First

I told Preston to stay in the car.

He didn't like it, and he said so with one look, and then he did it.

The bakery was closed, the chairs up on the tables, and a single light burning over the counter.

The baker, who had given me cinnamon rolls for three years, stood behind the till with his arms crossed.

"She asked for you," he said. "I told her I would not let her upstairs."

"Thank you."

"I will stay," he said, and did not move.

Preston's mother sat at the small round table by the window with her handbag on her knee.

She looked out of place against the flour sacks and the bad lighting.

She knew it, and she didn't care.

"Sit down, Hannah," she said.

"No."

"Then stand. It won't take long."

She opened her handbag and took out a folded sheet of paper.

She laid it on the table and turned it toward me with one finger.

It was a page from the video platform, with the header cut off.

One line read: First upload, account created nine days prior, device: bakery network.

Under it someone had written, in neat pen, a name.

Bridget Doyle.

My stomach turned over.

"You paid someone," I said.

"I have friends at that company. It was no trouble." She smoothed the paper. "I know who put your child in front of nine million strangers, and so will the press, by Friday. Your best friend. The woman who shared your flat and your rent."

"That's not true."

"It's on this page."

"I mean it isn't the way you're going to tell it."
