Chapter 7: My Turn at the Microphone

Hannah's POV

The gate alarm kept ringing, and Preston ran for the front door before I could stop him.

I followed.

At the bottom of the drive, the iron gate stood open a foot, and on the far side of it a crowd of reporters had closed in around one woman in a pale suit.

She had not gone to the airport.

She was standing in the road with her pearls on, and her chin up, and a dozen microphones in her face.

"I'm only a grandmother who wants to see her family," she said, in a trembling voice I hadn't heard in the hall. "My son is a generous man. He has been taken advantage of before."

"By whom, Mrs. Aldridge?"

"I can't say. I only want my granddaughter safe from people who saw a lonely man and a fortune."

Preston stopped three steps from the gate.

His hands were shaking.

I put mine on his arm without thinking.

I felt his muscles go hard under my fingers.

I took my hand away fast.

"Rule three," I said, hoarse.

"Understood," he said, hoarse right back.

"Let me."

"Hannah."

"She said it into a microphone. It's my turn to answer."

"You don't have to."

"You can't. If you step out there, you're a rich man yelling at his mother. If I do, I'm the woman she lied about."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he stepped back out of the line of the cameras, deliberately, behind the gatepost, and nodded once.

I walked out through the gap in the gate.

Voices rose around me.

"That's her! That's the mother!"

"Miss, are you the woman Mrs. Aldridge means?"
