Chapter 9: Nine Years

I sat down on the stair beside Tiffany, because my legs had stopped being mine.

"I was twenty-one," she said. "I was engaged to Nathaniel Aldridge, and I was one night from being his wife."

I stared at her.

"Say that again."

"Nathaniel and I were engaged. For two years." She wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. "I met Preston at the engagement dinner. He was twenty. He followed me around the garden for a month, and I was stupid, and I let him."

"Preston was your first love."

"Preston was my first mistake." Her mouth shook. "Nathaniel found us in his own guest room, the night before the wedding. He didn't shout. He just closed the door and walked away, and he never spoke to me again."

She took a long breath.

"He is cold, Claire. He would have married you for revenge and thrown you out the day it was done. That's what he does."

I stood up.

"Thank you," I said, and I meant it, even though it hurt. "I'll ask him."

She looked up at me with wet green eyes.

"He won't tell you the truth."

"Then I'll know that too."

I climbed the stairs and walked down the east corridor in his shirt.

The door of the blue room was open.

Nathaniel stood at the window in dark trousers, with his back to me and his hands in his pockets.

He had dressed.

He had made the bed.

"She told you," he said, without turning.

"Some of it."

"I would have told you myself."

"Then tell me."

He turned.

Under the scar, his eyes were tired.

"The terms say we don't ask about the past," he said.

"The terms are void. You said it into my hair."

He almost smiled, and then he didn't.

"Sit down, Claire."

"I'll stand."

He nodded.

"Nine years ago I was twenty-nine, and I was going to marry a girl named Tiffany Lund on a Saturday in October. I loved her. The night before, I found her in the guest room with my brother's son."
