Chapter 6: Locked Out

I did not remember driving home.

I remembered the six pages on the passenger seat and the number thirty-six.

When I pulled up to my father's house, the neighbors were out on their lawns.

The woman next door was holding a rake she was not using.

I took my key out and pushed it into the front door lock.

It would not turn.

I tried again, and I tried the back door, and the key did not go in at all.

The locks had been changed.

Rhonda's car pulled into the drive behind my truck.

She got out fast, with her scarf trailing.

"Oh, no," she said. "Oh, sweetheart, I forgot to tell you. I called a locksmith this morning because of the reporters."

"Where's the new key?"

"He's coming back at four with the copies. He said it would be a few hours." She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "I thought you'd be gone longer. Forgive me."

"Mina is inside."

Rhonda's face went blank for half a breath.

"Is she? I thought she had gone."

"She was in bed with a cough."

I ran around the side of the house and looked up at the guest room window.

Mina was standing there in my flannel pajamas, one hand flat on the glass.

Her face was the color of candle wax.

I banged on the kitchen door and shouted her name.

She looked down at me and tried to lift the window.

She got it up two inches, and her knees went out from under her.

I did not think.

I ran to my truck and took the tire iron from behind the seat.

"Elin!" Rhonda called from the drive. "Think what you're doing!"
