Chapter 20: Unit 114
I woke Declan before I answered her.
"No secrets," I said, and held out the phone.
He read it twice with his hair on end.
"No," he said.
"She'll run if she sees you. She'll run if she sees a cop."
"She'll kill you."
"She's never touched anyone herself in her life." I was already pulling on jeans. "Call the detective. Tell him Unit 114 at six. Park at the corner and wait for my signal."
"What signal?"
"If I come out, it's over. If I don't, come in."
He caught my wrist.
"If anything happens," he said, "I'm not asking permission."
"I wouldn't ask yours either."
He kissed my knuckles once, hard, over the ring.
West Side Storage was a long gray building under a brown sky, with a gate arm at the front and rows of orange doors.
I drove through with the key tag number in my head and parked at the end of the lane.
Unit 114 stood half open.
A yellow light burned inside, and a white sedan was backed up so close to the door that I could hear the engine ticking.
I got out.
I walked to the opening and put my hand on the cold metal and said, "Tierney."
"Come in, Miri."
She stood in the middle of a bare concrete room in jeans and a gray sweatshirt, with a duffel at her feet and her hair scraped back.
Without the red dress and the pearls she looked younger, almost the girl I had met on a dorm floor.
The silver cuff was still on her wrist.
On a steel shelf behind her sat a gray metal box.
