Chapter 4: Sunday Dinner

The McMahons hold Sunday dinner at their house in Oak Park, and nobody, not even a new bride, gets to skip it.

By six o'clock Declan and I were sitting at his mother's long table with his father, two uncles, three cousins, and his sister Hazel, who had come straight from her shift at the hospital.

Hazel still wore her scrubs under her coat.

She is a trauma nurse, thirty-one, and she checks everyone's face for injuries before she says hello.

"You two look wrecked," she said, and passed me the potatoes. "Wedding night go that well?"

"Great," Declan said.

"Hazel," his mother said sharply. "Be kind."

The doorbell rang.

His mother had invited Tierney weeks ago, as the maid of honor and a daughter of the house.

Tierney came in with white roses and a bottle of wine, kissed his mother on both cheeks, and took the empty chair beside me.

I saw Declan's hands tighten on his fork.

I saw Hazel see it.

"Declan, you look sick," Hazel said.

"Long weekend."

"Miri was the best bartender the Tin Roof ever had," Tierney told the table brightly. "Back in Madison. Do you remember, Miri? That place, that lot out back?"

I froze.

Nobody at the table knew what the Tin Roof was.

She had said the name in front of a table full of strangers, on purpose, to see whether I would flinch.

I picked up my water. "I mostly remember the tips."

His uncles laughed.

Tierney smiled at me over the rim of her glass.

Declan put his fork down and stood up.

"Excuse me," he said.

He walked out to the hall, and Hazel followed him.
