Chapter 22: Whose House

Mitch read the lawyer's letter twice standing up and a third time sitting on my bed.

"She's not asking for anything," he said.

"She's asking for the car."

"That's not a settlement, Marin. That's a woman walking out with nothing." He rubbed his jaw. "She sat in our kitchen and called me a good man and tried to take my name. And now she wants a car."

"Take it as a win."

"I can't."

I waited.

"I've spent my whole adult life trying not to take things that weren't mine," Mitch said. "I'm not going to start by keeping a house she left with nothing. I'll sign her the car. I'll send her the money in the joint account, every cent. She can do what she likes with it."

"After what she did?"

"After what she did, I want her to have no reason to ever knock on a door of ours."

I thought about it.

Then I nodded.

He watched my face as he said it, to see if I would object.

I didn't.

"Good," I said. "That one's yours to decide."

He took something out of his pocket.

It was a brass key on a leather loop, worn at the edges.

"The workshop," he said. "I had a copy cut. It's yours. You can come in at midnight or at noon, and you never have to ask."

I turned it over in my palm.

"What about the house?" I said.

"The house is yours too, if you want it. Any room, any time."

"I don't want the house."
