Chapter 21: The Family
My sister put both hands on my face and cried.
Half the hall was still watching.
"We were so wrong," she said. "We should have been there. Come home, Vi, and we'll have everyone to dinner Sunday and put this behind us."
"Whose dinner?"
"The family's. Aunt's house. Everybody."
"Marcy's mother."
"She's sorry too."
I looked over my sister's shoulder at my aunt.
She was dabbing at her eyes with a napkin, and her eyes were dry.
"We only ever wanted what was best for you," my aunt said. "Marcy is your blood. A terrible mistake shouldn't cost a family."
"A terrible mistake," I said.
"You'll forgive her in time. We'll all be together again."
"Sunday, in your house."
"With a cake," she said.
My sister squeezed my arm.
"And Vi, when you come, you'll leave those men outside. They've done a lot for you, but we can't have them at the table."
I looked at Doom.
He stood a step behind me with his hands folded, and he hadn't spoken a word.
He was looking at my sister without blinking.
"Say that again," I said to her.
"What?"
"The part about those men."
She faltered.
"You know what I mean. People will talk. They're, you know."
"I don't, actually."
"Violet, they're a gang."
"They are the only people who came for me," I said.
The hall had gone quiet again, and I raised my voice, because I wanted them all to hear.
"When I was in a clinic bed with my shoulder out, you didn't call. When Marcy stood at the gate with a made-up baby, you let our aunt drive her there. When I got a husband out of my house and a crook out of the sheriff's office, I did it with strangers."
