Chapter 22: Property
The long table in the big room was set for forty, and every chair was full.
I came down the stairs on Sunday at noon in a clean green dress, with my sling folded in my pocket.
Doc had pulled it off me that morning.
"Two weeks early," he'd said. "Don't carry anything heavy."
"I never do."
"Liar."
The room went quiet when I walked in.
Doom stood at the head of the table with something folded in his hands.
It was black leather, soft with wear.
Behind him, the VP stood with his arms crossed, and Doc had taken the seat at his right.
The blonde club girl leaned on the wall by the kitchen door.
She didn't smile at me.
"Violet," Doom said.
"You said a clean dress."
"I said that."
"It's the only one I own that isn't red."
A few of the men laughed.
Doom didn't.
"Come here."
I walked the length of the table.
Forty pairs of eyes followed me, and I held every one of them.
When I reached him, he unfolded the leather.
It was a small vest, cut to my size, with a black crown of nails sewn over the heart.
Across the back, in white thread, it said: PROPERTY OF DOOM.
I read it.
I read it again.
"Say something," he said, low.
"You have terrible timing."
"Violet."
"I'm reading."
The VP cleared his throat.
"Brothers," he said. "The Prez asks for a property patch for this woman. You know what it means."
Nobody answered.
"It means that whoever touches her answers to every man in this room," he said. "It means she eats at this table, and her word counts, and her enemies are ours. Does anyone here object?"
