Chapter 6: Under Guard

Doom's POV

I hauled him up by his collar and hit him again.

He folded on the grass and tried to crawl.

I put a boot on his back and held him there.

He had put his hand on her arm, and I'd heard her scream through a closed door.

I hadn't known I could move that fast.

"You touched her," I said.

"I'm her husband," Kent gasped.

"You're nobody."

He spat blood and started to laugh, which was stupid.

"You don't know who you're messing with," he said. "I have friends at the sheriff's office. Friends who'd love to meet you."

I looked down at him.

That was a strange thing for an insurance salesman to say to a stranger in a vest.

"What friends?" I asked.

He heard what he'd said, and his eyes went wide and he shut his mouth.

I let him wait for it.

"Get up," I said. "If I see you within a block of her again, I'll put you in the river and nobody will ask."

He crawled to his feet.

He limped to a white sedan at the curb, and it took him three tries to start it.

I watched him drive away with my hands still shaking from wanting more.

A truck pulled in as the sedan turned the corner.

Zane stepped out with a pharmacy bag and took one look at my knuckles and the blood on the lawn.

"What happened?"

"Your sister's husband showed up," I said. "Put his hands on her."

Zane's face went dark.

"I wasn't gone fifteen minutes."

"That's all it takes."

We went inside.

Doc held out his palm for the pills.
