Chapter 29: The Holm Scholarship
The foundation's conference room had a long walnut table and a view of the river, and on Monday morning it held three people, a baby and a stack of papers.
Margit sat at the head with her reading glasses on.
Soren sat across from me, with his hands folded and his eyes on Wren, who was gnawing a teething ring on my lap.
"Astrid's counsel came to see me yesterday," Margit said. "She will repay the retainer in full over ten years. The pension is ended. She has resigned, and she has asked that nobody contact her."
"She'll hold to that," I said.
"I think she will."
She turned over the first page.
"This is the dissolution of the Maddox Scholarship. This is the restitution agreement, which I have signed already. And this is the third thing, which I wrote myself on Sunday, and which you may throw in the river."
She slid it across.
It was one page, typed, with her signature at the bottom in the upright hand I knew from the cream invitation.
I read it.
"The Holm Scholarship," I said.
"It is a place at a summer camp for children whose families cannot pay." Her voice was careful. "The foundation bought the cottage and the shoreline on Little Sable Lake yesterday from the young couple. They were relieved. We will build a new dock, and a lodge, and we will open in June."
"It's a camp," Soren said quietly.
"It's Camp Tamarack," Margit said. "With a new name on the gate."
I looked at the page and did not touch it.
I thought of a girl on a bus with her face against the glass, and a bus mechanic in a work jacket at the station with his hat in his hands.
