Chapter 5: Margit

Margit Lund crossed the street and held the bakery door for me, as though I were the guest.

She wore the navy coat, pearl earrings and the same smooth gray-blonde hair I had seen at three Christmases.

Elin started to rise, and I shook my head.

"Sit by the window," I said. "Watch my back."

"I'll watch your cardamom bun," Elin said, and she moved to the next table.

Margit took the seat across from me and folded her gloves in her lap.

She looked at my cast and then, deliberately, at my face.

"I'm sorry about your hand."

"Thank you."

"The foundation has already asked its insurers to cover everything. The surgeon, the therapy, all of it."

"I've paid for my surgery with my own money."

"Of course you have." She smiled slightly. "You're very like your father, I think. Soren told me he fixed buses."

"He did."

"I admired that." She paused. "I would like to be direct, Linnea, because I think you prefer it."

"I do."

"My son has not slept in three days. He sits in the kitchen and watches the same video of the ballroom. He asked me to find you, and I did, but I'm not here only for him."

"Then why?"

"I'm here to make this easier for both of you."

She took an envelope from her handbag and set it on the table, face down.

"There is a settlement in there. It is two million dollars, the house on the lake, and an apartment of your choice in any city. In return, we ask for a quiet divorce. No press, no interviews, and no claim on the foundation or the firm."
