Chapter 16: The Bride

Nobody moved.

Behind me, Lyle set the two mugs down on the hall table very gently.

"Hey, kid," he said.

"Don't." His sister didn't take her eyes off me. "I saw your car from my window at six, Julie. I've been sitting on Mom's porch for an hour deciding whether to knock."

"Come in," I said.

"I don't want to come in. I want you to tell me what's going on with my wedding."

I was standing in a doorway in her brother's T-shirt with my hair everywhere.

It was not how I'd pictured this.

"Okay," I said. "I'll tell you what I can. Can I put on pants first?"

She stared at me.

Then something cracked at the corner of her mouth, half a laugh and half a sob.

"Yes. Please. Put on pants."

When I came back in my green dress, she was sitting at Lyle's kitchen table with her hands around one of the mugs.

Lyle was leaning on the counter with his arms folded, very still.

I sat across from her.

"He told me you're jealous," she said. "That you walked out on Jeff, and now you want to drag the whole family down with you. He said you were bitter. He said you'd say things."
