Chapter 21: Even
I did not call my father back.
I turned the phone face down on the sideboard, took Lachlan by the shirt, and walked him backward to the bed.
"We're done being polite," I said.
"Were we being polite?"
"I want to be even."
"Even how?"
"You've undone me nine different ways in three weeks." I pushed him down on the white sheets. "I want to do the same."
He looked up at me with a lazy, wicked smile.
"I'm available."
"You're about to be."
I pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it.
I undid his belt, and his trousers, and dragged them off along with everything else.
He lay there naked on his back with his cock already thick against his stomach.
I kissed his mouth and his throat, and sucked a mark below his ear where a collar would hide it.
He groaned and arched up into me.
His hands tried to find my hips.
I caught his wrists and pinned them to the sheets.
"No," I said. "Not yet."
"You're enjoying this."
"I'm enjoying all of it."
I took off my dress.
I stood at the foot of the bed in the lamp light and let him look.
"I'd have married you broke," I said.
"I know."
"I'd have married you if you had a Volvo and a cracked dash and a hospital loan."
"I did have those."
"I know you did."
I crawled onto the bed and up his body on my hands and knees, and kissed his stomach.
The line of hair below his navel, and then the hollow of his hip.
His breath shook.
"And you married me with nothing but a hospital gown and a stolen phone," he said.
