Chapter 14: The Audit

"A vote," Ewan said. "Fine. Hold it tonight."

"I will," said the man in the camel coat. "And before I do, I want to know who drafted that schedule."

He turned to the stairs and raised his voice to the whole atrium.

"Somebody built nine million dollars of savings on a list nobody checked.

"By noon my analyst will have every document behind it on the Studio B wall screen.

"If the cuts were sound, I put them back.

"If they weren't, someone in this building has some explaining to do."

He wasn't being kind.

He wanted a villain who wasn't himself, and he didn't care who it turned out to be.

At noon Studio B was standing room only.

Twenty-six drafters leaned on tables and stools.

The investor sat in the front row with his coat on his knee.

His analyst stood at the wall screen with a laptop on a stool.

She was a young woman in a navy blazer, brisk as a stapler.

Ewan stood against the side wall with his arms folded and his steel ring catching the skylight.

Jorie stood next to me with her fists in her overalls.

Dexter had come in last.

He took a place by the door, with his portfolio under one arm, and I watched him do the arithmetic of the exits.
