Chapter 23: Properly

The rotunda sat back down.

Two hundred people in folding chairs, under a dome, looked at my husband as if he were about to set fire to the wine.

Ewan held the microphone stand with both hands.

He didn't look at his notes, because he hadn't brought any.

"Three things," he said.

"First, I'm not going to make a speech."

A nervous laugh went around the room.

"Second.

"Twenty-one people in the back rows were on a list I signed.

"Tonight I signed something else.

"A fifth of my share of Lakeline now belongs to the twenty-one of you, in a trust you run yourselves.

"You'll vote on how this firm treats people, and I'll abide by what you say."

Nobody moved.

The drafter in his fifties, number seventeen, wiped his face with the back of his hand.

Jorie said "Oh, for God's sake," very loudly, and burst into tears.

"Third," said Ewan, and his voice dropped.

"Ten days ago a woman called me at three in the morning.

"She asked for a husband and told me not to ask why.

"I said yes, and I never asked her anything.

"I never asked her the question you ask, when you're not being ordered."

He came down the steps.
