Chapter 13: The Man I Married

"No," I said.

I held the card against my chest.

"Bree, I'm begging you."

"You can beg from there."

He stopped at the mouth of the hall, ten feet away, with the blanket still over his arm.

I had never seen him look small before.

"Was it true?" I asked. "Every word of it?"

"Yes."

"Say it."

His throat worked.

"I was driving," he said. "Danny was on the back."

The hallway was very quiet.

"Start at the beginning," I said. "And if you stop, I walk out and you tell it to a state trooper instead."

His knees gave, and he sat down on a bench against the wall.

"It was the club's spring party," he said. "Gus's idea, the first warm Saturday. I'd been drinking since four."

"Danny was twenty-four."

"He'd had two beers. He told me that, and I believed it. His own bike was in your dad's shop with a bad clutch."

I remembered that bike.

I had helped him pull the clutch plate myself.

"He wanted to go home early," Travis said. "He had a shift at the garage in the morning. I said I'd run him back."

"Drunk."

"Yes."

"You put my brother on the back of your bike, drunk."

"Yes."

He said it without any excuse, and that made it worse.

"Mile 41 has that left bend," he said. "I took it too fast. The front wheel went in the gravel, and the bike went down, and I slid one way and he went the other."

His hands opened and closed on his knees.

"I got up. I had a cracked collarbone and a hole in my jeans. He didn't get up."
