Chapter 21: The Porch Swing
The trooper had a gray mustache and a folder as thick as a phone book.
He stood in the bay with his hat in his hands, between the lift and my father's red toolbox.
"Mrs. Mercer," he said.
"Callahan."
"Ms. Callahan. I'm sorry." He cleared his throat. "Travis Mercer walked into the barracks at nine this morning and handed me eight pages. We've also had a call from Gus Rathburn, who is on his way in with a lawyer."
"I know."
"The district attorney is reopening the file on your brother's death. It's been eleven years, and there will be questions about what can be charged and against whom."
"Will you charge Travis?"
"That's the DA's call. But I'll tell you what I told him." The trooper looked at me straight. "That report closed with a false statement. Somebody will answer for it."
"And Danny?"
"The state corrects its record," he said. "Your brother's file will say he was a passenger. I'll have it in writing for your mother by Friday."
I nodded because I couldn't say anything.
Hank stood behind me with his hand flat on my back.
When the trooper had gone, I leaned my forehead against the cold frame of the lift and breathed.
"Take me home," I said.
"Which one?"
"Yours."
Hank's daughter was at her grandmother's, and the little gray house was quiet.
We ate cold chicken at the kitchen counter, and he washed the plates, and I dried them.
When the dishes were done, he took my hand and led me out the back door.
There was a porch swing at the end of the deck, an old wooden one with a faded cushion.
The yard was dark, and the crickets were loud.
The light over the door was off.
