Chapter 4: Twelve Customers

I got to the shop at six on Tuesday morning, and there were already twelve motorcycles parked out front.

I had not slept, because a hundred and forty thousand dollars had sat on my chest all night.

Travis had said the debt stays with the name on the deed, and the deed said Callahan.

I had a plan for that, and the plan was to keep the doors open and the bikes moving.

I knew most of the faces.

They were my father's customers, and some of them had been bringing bikes to Callahan Cycle since before I could reach the bench.

A man in his seventies with a white ponytail leaned on a Gold Wing and tipped his cap.

"Heard you might need a hand, kid," he said.

"Who told you?"

"Everybody." He shrugged. "That's what a clubhouse is for."

I unlocked the roll-up door and shoved it up with both hands.

The shop smelled the way it always had, like oil and cold metal and the cedar air freshener my father swore he did not use.

Hank came in behind me and set the red toolbox on the main bench.

F.C. faced the room.

I put my palm flat on the lid for a second.

Then I turned around, and twelve people were standing in my father's bay with their hats in their hands.

I had not planned a speech, so I said it plainly.

"Travis isn't running this shop anymore. I found out Sunday that he's been seeing someone for eight months. I found out yesterday that the shop's account is empty."

Nobody said anything.

"He spent sixty-one thousand dollars of my father's money on a cabin for her. The cabin is on a lake forty minutes from here. Hank drove me up, and he carried my dad's toolbox off her porch."

The man with the white ponytail whistled low through his teeth.
