Chapter 25: The Hearing
I didn't turn around.
"I don't need luck," I said. "I need the projector."
Behind me Mae said, "She needs the projector," to the whole row.
The chair of the state board tapped her microphone and the gym went quiet.
Spaulding's lawyer went first.
He talked for twenty minutes about investment, and modernization, and the true cost of water.
He called the outage "an isolated equipment event." Then the chair looked at me.
"Ms. Brainard. For the petitioners."
I stood up and unrolled my plan on the table.
"This is the Alder Falls Rebuild Plan," I said. "I wrote it five years ago, when I was this company's engineer."
I held up the corner with the red stamp.
"RECEIVED. Town clerk. March 11. That's my grandmother's stamp."
Opal raised her stamp book in the third row like a hymnal.
"Spaulding's turnaround plan is this plan," I said, "with my name taken off and every repair page cut out."
I put the pages on the screen one at a time.
