Chapter 11: The Draft

The storage box was empty.

The board chair told us on Monday morning, standing in the doorway of Julius's new office with her pearls in one hand.

"There is a folder labeled Blomqvist Trust, June," she said. "It's in the box Roderick promised. It contains a menu from a restaurant."

Julius looked up from the desk.

"A menu."

"For a very nice steakhouse. Nothing else." She came in and shut the door behind her. "I've sat on this board for nineteen years. I have never liked the way he says friend. Tell me what you need."

Julius slid the courier receipt across the desk.

She read it twice.

Then she read the cover note, in the tidy slanted hand, and she took her glasses off.

"That's his handwriting," she said flatly.

"Yes."

"I've had thank-you notes in that hand."

"There's a second thing," I said. I was in the chair by the window, with Agatha beside me gripping her oboe case like a handrail. "Seven years ago, a text came to my phone from Julius's number. He swears he never sent it."

"The phone belonged to the trust," Julius said. "It was on the family plan. Roderick managed the account."

"Then the carrier will have a record."

"That's what I'm hoping."

He took out his phone and put it on speaker.

It took twenty minutes of music and a menu of choices.

Then a young man with a patient voice came on, and Julius explained that he was a beneficiary of the Blomqvist Family Trust and that he needed an activity log for a line that had been closed five years ago.

"I'm sorry, sir, I can only discuss accounts with the primary holder."

"The primary holder is the trust. I'm a named co-beneficiary. I'm in the room with the board chair."

The board chair leaned toward the phone.

"This is the chair of the North Star Philharmonic board. I can confirm his standing in writing within the hour."

There was a long pause, then keys clicking.
