Chapter 6: Liebesleid

He walked me backward until my shoulders met the wall.

His mouth was on mine again before I finished breathing.

Seven years ago he kissed, slow and attentive.

Now he kissed.

I got my hands under his shirt and dragged it up, and he let go of me just long enough to pull it over his head.

He was thinner.

I could count his ribs under my palms, and I put my mouth to them one by one, and I felt his stomach pull tight.

"Leona."

"Be quiet."

"I have thought about this."

"I said be quiet."

He laughed against my hair, a ragged sound, and then his hands were at the zipper of my black audition dress.

It went down my back in one long pull.

The dress dropped around my feet.

He stepped back an inch to look at me, in the lamplight, in my bra and my plain cotton underwear, and his face did something I'll never forget.

It was not hunger.

It was grief.

I hated it, and I took his belt in both hands.

"Don't look at me like that. Fuck me, Julius."

He made a sound low in his chest.

Then he lifted me.

It happened so fast I gasped.

My legs wrapped around his waist and my back hit the wall again and his mouth was on my throat, hot and hungry, biting just hard enough that I arched.

"Bed," he said into my skin.

"Not yet."

"Leona."

"I want you here."

I felt him shudder.

He carried me three steps to the dresser instead and set me on the edge of it, scattering his watch and a hotel pen.

I pulled my underwear down my legs and kicked it away.

He stood between my knees and looked at me.

Then he went down on his knees on the hotel carpet.

His glasses were off, and his hair fell in his eyes, and he looked up at me as he put his mouth on me.

The first stroke of his tongue made me cry out.

He knew me.

He had always known how to find the exact place and stay there, and seven years had taught him nothing but patience.
