Chapter 5: The Bubble Tea

The next afternoon Polly walked into the station lobby carrying a tray of bubble teas.

She wore a pale blue dress and her braid was tied with a ribbon.

Everyone at the reception desk turned to watch her.

"Kirsten," she said, loud enough for the whole floor. "I'm so sorry about last night. I wanted to say it to your face."

I took the tray from her so she would stop holding it up like an offering.

"This is my workplace," I said quietly. "If you have something to say, we'll say it outside."

I turned toward the doors.

She grabbed my wrist.

I pulled back, and she let go at the exact moment I did.

She went down hard on the floor and the tray went with her.

Pink tea ran across the marble.

I had not pushed her.

I had barely moved.

Polly lay there holding her wrist, which had a scrape across it that I had not made, and her eyes filled.

"Kirsten, I pulled Nolan out of a ravine," she said, to the whole lobby. "I never wanted to come between you. I just want to know he's safe. Is that so wrong?"

Phones came up around me.

"She saved his life, and that's how she's treated?"

"She tells the whole city to be kind, and look at her."

Joan stepped in front of me.

She had come out of the glass booth with her headphones still around her neck.
