Chapter 16: Brynn's Last Offer

Brynn straightened off the hood when she saw us.

She looked thinner than three weeks ago. Her hair was in a plain knot, and she wore no lipstick.

"Carrie," she said. "Please. Five minutes."

"No," Dean said.

"I wasn't asking you."

Faye stepped half in front of me. I put my cane on the asphalt and moved her aside, gently.

"It's fine," I said. "Five minutes. Out here."

Dean looked at me.

"Stay by the door," I told him. "Please."

He stayed. I walked to the edge of the parking space, close enough to smell her shampoo.

Vanilla and brown sugar. The same smell from the blue shirt.

"I'm not here to fight," Brynn said.

"Then why did you follow me?"

"I didn't follow you. I called the station and asked if anyone had come in about the cyclist. They said you had a meeting." She tried a small smile. "I'm good at finding things out."

"You're good at that."

Her smile slipped.

"Here's what I came to say," she said. "I'll resign. Today. I've written the letter, and I'll hand it to HR myself."

"That's your choice."

"And you stop. You don't go back to the board, you don't put the notes on the internet, you don't talk to the reporter who keeps calling me."

"I haven't talked to any reporter."

"Then you won't have to start." She stepped closer. "In exchange, I stay out of your life. Out of his. You can have the house and the couch and the guilt trip, and nobody ever says my name again."

I almost laughed.

"You've got that backward," I said. "You're not offering me anything. You're asking me to cover for you."
