Chapter 5: The Bike
On Tuesday afternoon a pickup truck pulled into Faye's driveway, and a man with a white beard climbed out and started unloading my bike.
I watched from the window, leaning on my crutches.
The back wheel was bent in half. The seat was scraped down to the metal. One handlebar grip was missing.
The man wheeled it up the walk and rang the bell.
I got the door open on the third try.
"Carrie Lamont?" He had a deep voice and reading glasses on a cord around his neck. "I'm Hank Odegaard. I own the bike shop on College. I sold this to your husband four years ago."
"I remember. You gave me a free bell."
He grinned. "That's me. Mind if I come in? My knees are older than yours."
I let him in.
He parked the bike in the hall, propped it carefully against the wall, and stood with his cap in his hands.
"The detective called me this morning," he said. "The tow yard was going to scrap it. I told him I'd take it. Thought you might want it back, even like this."
My throat tightened.
"Why?"
"Because you rode it," he said. "That's more than most people do with their bikes."
I laughed, and then my eyes stung, and I looked away.
"Sit down," I said. "I'll make coffee."
"You'll do no such thing. I'll make it. You sit."
He found the kettle on the first try.
He found the mugs and the coffee just as fast.
I decided he had spent a lot of time in other people's kitchens.
He brought two mugs to the couch and sat in Faye's chair.
