Chapter 14: The Clip

The clip went up at six on Christmas Eve morning, and by eight it had four million views.

Gethin's sister sent it to him from Swansea with no message at all.

He passed me his phone across the kitchen table and didn't say anything.

It was a woman's voice, shaking and loud, over a still photograph of me in my wedding dress.

"You'll be sorry," the voice said. "I'll ruin you. I'll make you all sorry."

White letters ran across the bottom: WRENFIELD WIFE THREATENS HUSBAND'S FIRM.

I knew every word of it, because I had said every word.

"It's spring," I said. "It's the night he cancelled our anniversary."

"Is that you?"

"It's me, cut up. Bryony answered his line that night and told me he was in a meeting for the fifth time." My own voice was hoarse in my ears. "I said if he didn't ring me back, I'd make you all sorry I'd ever sat quietly at your table."

"Quietly at your table," Gethin said. "That's the end of it."

"That's the end of it, and it isn't in the clip."

The caption said I had made the call last week, from the home of the man who was now my lover.

Under it, forty thousand people had written that I sounded dangerous.

I put his phone down and found that my hands were steady, which surprised me.

The doorbell went at half past eight.

Gethin looked through the front window and swore, quietly.

"Two cars," he said. "One's got a camera on the roof."

His own phone started up again on the table.
