Chapter 10: Full Moon

"I'm a baker," I said. "From the valley. I make a decent rye."

He didn't laugh.

He came back to the bed and sat on the edge of it, and put his hand flat over my scar.

I felt the heat start under his palm at once.

"That," he said. "What is that?"

"I don't know. It's never done it for anyone but you."

He kept his hand there a long time.

Then he leaned down and kissed my forehead, and held it there.

"Tonight's the full moon," he said into my hair. "The whole Court runs. I have to lead it."

"I know. I'll watch from the terrace."

"Stay near the lanterns. Stay near Oona."

"Evander. I've watched full moons from a porch my whole life. I'm good at it."

That finally got a breath of a laugh out of him.

The Court's full moon run started at the great terrace, a long stone balcony over the pine valley, strung with lanterns.

At dusk the wolves came out in robes and coats and gathered on the lawn below it.

Two hundred of them. Council elders, courtiers, guards, the young ones bouncing on their toes.

The rest of us watched from above.

The wolfless.

There were more of us than I'd thought.

A dozen old wolves whose wolves had faded with age, wrapped in blankets. A pregnant woman told not to run. A boy with a broken arm in a sling, sulking.

And the old healer in her wheelchair at the end of the terrace, her shawls up to her nose.

She saw me and turned her face away.

Oona stood beside me in her riding coat, eating a pear.

"I'm not running," she said. "I hate running. Also somebody has to stand next to you and look scary."

"Is that why you're eating?"

"I'm scary when I eat."

On the lawn, my father stood with the Council in a long black coat.

Lyla stood near him in a white robe, her hair loose down her back.

She looked up at the terrace and found me in the lantern light.
