Chapter 19: The Seat Taken

My father didn't move.

He sat in seat eleven with his hands flat on the carved arms and his face gone the color of candle wax.

I could smell his fear. I had never smelled anything in my life, not like this.

I growled at him, low and long, and he got out of the chair.

He backed away from it, one step, two, until his shoulders hit the stone balustrade.

I didn't know how to come back.

Then I thought of my own hands, flour on the cuffs, and I was kneeling on the cold terrace on two knees, shaking, with my hair in my face.

Oona's riding coat landed over my shoulders before anyone could see more than they already had.

"I've been waiting my whole life to do that for somebody," she said in my ear.

I stood up in it.

Evander was coming up the steps behind me.

He was gray and unsteady, a guard's arm under his. My bite was dark on his shoulder.

He was alive. That was all I needed to know for the next ten minutes.

I turned to the Council.

"Twice now I've stopped the King from deciding this for me," I said. "I'm deciding it now."
