Chapter 9: First Night
He came in and kicked the door shut behind him without looking.
Then he just stood there, in the middle of my room, with his hands at his sides.
"I've been waiting outside your door for an hour," he said.
"Then stop standing in the middle of the room."
"I'm trying to be a gentleman."
"You were a gentleman for eight years in a closet," I said. "How did that go?"
He laughed.
It came out of him, and he put a hand over his face.
"Badly," he said through his fingers. "It went badly."
I sat down on the end of the bed.
After a second he sat next to me. Not touching.
The fire had burned low. Snow ticked against the window.
"Tell me something true," I said. "From the Academy. Something I don't know."
He thought about it.
"Second year. October. It rained for a week."
"I remember."
"You were standing under the library arch with an umbrella. Yellow. With ducks on it."
I groaned. "It was my mother's."
"I came out without a coat. I was soaked. I was the Prince and nobody would stand next to me because they were all scared of me." He looked at his hands. "You held the umbrella over both of us and said, 'You'll catch your death, Your Highness, and then where will we be?'"
"I said that?"
"Then you walked me all the way to the east dormitory and didn't say another word." He shook his head. "I was twenty. I stood in the hall dripping on the floor and thought, oh no."
I was smiling so hard it hurt.
"And the humming?"
"Every afternoon, third table from the window. Always the same song. You didn't know you were doing it." He finally looked at me. "I told you to stop because I couldn't read a single page."
"You were awful to me."
"I was in love with you," he said. "Those were the same thing, at twenty."
The room went quiet.
He'd said it the way he said everything. Plainly.
I reached over and took his face in both hands.
His skin was hot. His eyes had already gone half gold.
"Is he loud?" I whispered.
"He's always loud."
"Let him be loud."
I kissed him.
He let me.
His hands came up slow and settled on my hips, not pulling, just holding.
I could feel the heat of him through his T-shirt, through my thin nightgown.
His mouth was exactly as I remembered from the closet.
Hot and sure and patient, like he had all the time in the world.
I didn't.
I broke the kiss and yanked his T-shirt up.
He lifted his arms and I pulled it off over his head.
The firelight was red and low, and his chest was broad and scarred, and I put both hands flat on his skin.
"Lie back," I said.
"Hesper."
"Now."
He lay back on the white quilt with his head on my pillow and his eyes already more gold than gray.
I climbed over him, one knee on either side of his hips, and looked down at him.
"I've thought about this," I said.
"For how long?"
"Eight years. And then I stopped letting myself. But it's been there."
"Since graduation," he said.
"Since the steps. Your hand touched mine."
