Chapter 21: The Night Before
On the eighth night the wind came round to the north and the lantern tower groaned.
Two of the Crown's guards sat on the lowest steps of the spiral stair with a deck of cards and a jug.
Sixty steps above them, in the keeper's room under the great dark lamp, Perrine lay on the narrow cot.
Her face was turned to the wall.
Lucan came in and locked the door behind him.
He didn't speak.
He took off his coat and laid it on the chair.
She heard the small sounds of him sitting down on the edge of the cot, and then his hand came to rest on her back.
"She told me everything," he said.
Perrine rolled over.
His face was grey in the glass light.
"The ones who got in her way," she said. "The friends."
"How did you know?"
"I didn't. I knew there'd have been some." She sat up. "She said it to you?"
"In her nightgown. Mending a glove."
"And there's no one else who heard it," Perrine said.
"No."
"Then she's right. We have nothing."
"We have a keeper," Lucan said, "who is somewhere between here and the north coast, in a cart."
"The rider has lost him twice. They moved him from the pension house three weeks ago, under another name, on a paper from the Fund."
