Chapter 9: The Blessing of the Fleet
The bell was the Temple's, ringing the Blessing of the Fleet.
Lucan dressed in the grey light with his back to her, buttoning a shirt still damp from the night.
Perrine sat on the cutting bench with the lamp burnt out beside her and a sailcloth pulled round her shoulders.
She watched him do it.
Six hours ago she would have called that a mistake.
She still did.
She wasn't sorry.
"There's something you'll want to hear before you go to her," she said.
He didn't turn. "I've heard enough from you for one night."
"Today the Prior is going to carry a dying sailor onto the quay. The man will be on a door, grey as ash, sweating. The harbor will crowd round. Aurelie will kneel and lay her hand on his forehead and he'll sit up and weep, and all of Saltmere will fall down on its knees."
Now he turned.
"How do you know that?"
"I know it," Perrine said.
"You said a week ago you didn't know what was in the Fund's strongbox. You said you guessed."
"I guessed that. This I know," Perrine said.
"How?"
Perrine looked at him.
She could not say, I read it in a book, and in the end you weep over my body.
"Because I've watched her for six years," she said instead, "and she likes to win in public."
"That is a vile thing to say."
"Is it?" Perrine asked.
"You're accusing a girl who has sat at dying beds."
"I'm accusing the Prior, who is paid by the Dowager's friends, and the sailor, who has a wife and a debt. I'm asking you to check one thing." She held up a finger. "The man's ship. It will be the Gull. He'll say he's off the Gull, home with the fever three weeks."
"The Gull's at sea."
