Chapter 10: The Wolf at the Gate

Forty foxes went silent behind Linden.

Prim's bow came off her back.

He put his hand on her arm without looking.

"Don't," he said.

He went down three steps, no more.

Enough that Osric had to look up at him.

"I'm not your wife," Linden said. "You renounced me in front of three hundred wolves. You were very clear about it."

Osric smiled.

He'd always smiled like that when Linden said something he thought was cute.

"I renounced the bond," he said. "Not the arrangement. Lucian still wants you."

"For laundry."

"For the house. You know it. You run it better than anyone." Osric shrugged inside his fur collar. "Come back as his attendant, and I'll leave your foxes in the valley till midsummer. That's generous."

"You burned their granary."

"I don't know anything about a granary."

He said it lightly.

"Six masked riders with Blackmere torches," Linden said.

"Bandits." Osric looked past him for the first time, at the crowd in the gate. His lip curled. "Gods, you brought them all. Look at them. Is that what you've been doing up here? Breeding pelts for the dragon?"

A kit near the front hid her face in her mother's skirt.

Linden's hands went cold.

"Say that again," Prim said behind him.

"Quiet, girl."

"She's not a girl to you," Linden said. "She's the best tracker in the Northmark, and she'll put an arrow through your stallion's bridle from the top of these steps if I ask her."

"Please ask me," Prim said.

Osric's eyes flicked to her, then back to Linden.

Something had changed in them.

For three years Linden had said yes, Osric, and of course, Osric, and the wine's warming, Osric.
