Chapter 13: Owed

"No," Linden said.

Ivor blinked at him.

He was still holding Linden's hand against his glowing throat.

"No?"

"You heard me." Linden took his hand back. "You told me what one jet at the gate cost you. A week. You're not spending the rest on my neck."

"It's my fire."

"It's your life. And you said nobody pays for anybody up here." Linden slid down off the gold. "That goes both ways, dragon."

Ivor opened his mouth.

Linden kissed it shut.

It worked for a brief moment.

Then Ivor pulled back and glared at him with his mouth wet and his eyes gone dark.

"That's cheating," he said.

"I learned it from a lawyer."

Linden left him standing in the coins.

He had a better idea, and it didn't cost anybody a life.

He had his father's ledger.

Prim had carried it up the goat path in her pack, wrapped in oilcloth, along with the torch head.

Linden sat up half the night with both of them and a candle.

At harvest, the Hollow had paid Blackmere three hundred sacks of grain.

Three hundred sacks, for a year of protection.

Blackmere had taken the grain, renounced the protection at midwinter, and burned the rest.

In the morning Linden told Ivor he was riding to Blackmere.

Ivor didn't shout.

He went very quiet, which was worse.

"Then I'll come."

"You can't."

"Watch me."

"If a dragon walks into their hall, it's a threat. They'll give me grain because they're scared of you, and they'll hate us for it." Linden buttoned Ivor's coat up to his own chin. "I need them to give it because I'm right."

Ivor looked at him for a long moment.

"If they keep you," he said, "I'll come down and take the roof off."

"I know."

"With my teeth."

"I know, Ivor."

Ivor put a gold coin in Linden's palm and closed his fingers over it.
