Chapter 14: Grey Scales

Lucian stepped back and smiled at Linden for the whole hall to see.

"Safe ride home, Linden," he said sweetly.

Linden wiped Lucian's kiss off his cheek with the back of his hand.

Slowly, so every wolf at the high table watched him do it.

Then he walked out.

His legs held until the stable yard.

Prim caught his elbow when he stumbled at the mounting block.

"What did he say to you?"

"That Ivor's going to die."

"Everybody says that."

"He said it like he's counting on it." Linden got his foot in the stirrup on the second try. "And he said sell. Not keep. Sell."

Prim went white under her freckles.

She didn't ask what he meant.

A white fox knows what a white fox sells for.

They rode out through the gate at moonrise.

They reached the village at the foot of the mountain the next afternoon.

Linden wanted to go straight up the goat path.

Prim reined in outside the furrier's shop instead.

"Give me the box," she said.

"What box?"

"Lucian's box. With the hare in it. You've been carrying it in your saddlebag for two weeks like a love letter."

He gave it to her.

The furrier was a stooped old man with spectacles on a string.

He turned the fake tail over in his hands, and his face changed.

He turned it inside out at the base.

Burned into the skin side, under the seam, was a little mark.

"Where did you get this?" he said.

"Somebody sent it to my brother."

"Then your brother's got an enemy." The furrier put it down like it was dirty. "That's a tail-trader's brand. They sell dyed fakes like this to fools at fairs. Real ones they sell to rich men in the south."

"Where do they camp?" Prim said.

He didn't want to tell her.
