Chapter 15: Choose

"No," Linden said.

"It's a good plan."

"It's a will." Linden pulled his hand out of Ivor's. "You're lying on your gold writing a will at me."

"Somebody should have it." Ivor closed his eyes. "Better you than the Winter Court."

Linden stood up.

He walked to the hoard-hall door, where the whole keep was pretending not to listen.

The cook. The stableman. Prim with a kit on her hip. Both elders, and half the grandmothers, and a crowd of foxes behind them in the corridor.

"Come in," he said. "All of you. I want witnesses."

Ivor opened one eye.

"Linden."

They came in, slowly, onto the edge of the gold.

Linden turned around and faced Ivor in front of all of them.

"I have kept a secret from every one of you," he said. "It cost me a tail."

The elders went still.

A grandmother put her hand over her mouth.

"I did it in secret," Linden said. "I lied to my sister about it. I married him for the Hollow and never told him either. I've done every brave thing in my life in the dark, where nobody could see what it cost."

His voice shook.

"I'm not doing that again." He knelt on the gold beside Ivor. "So I'm asking you here, out loud, in front of my people. Let me give you one of my tails."

The hall was dead silent.

Ivor pushed himself up on one elbow.

"No," he said.

"I've got eight."

"No."

"I'd still have seven. Seven's plenty. Nobody needs nine."

"Linden." Ivor said it so quietly that the foxes at the back leaned in. "A tail pulls a dying man back from a wound. That's what it's for. Your wolf had an arrow in him. He was broken, and you mended him."

"And you're dying."

"I'm not broken." Ivor held up his grey arm. "Nothing's torn. My fire isn't wounded, it's running out. You'd pour a life into me and it would burn for a week, and then you'd have seven tails and a statue."
