Chapter 18: Bait
"The hook," Linden said. "It's the tail-traders."
Ivor took the peg out of his hand and smelled it.
His pupils went thin as needles.
"Four men," he said. "And her. And the wolf."
"What wolf?"
"Blackmere silver. And rose oil." His lip pulled back from his teeth. "Somebody in white silk has been holding this peg."
Lucian.
He'd seen the fire go up out of the mountain at dawn.
The dragon wasn't dying at the thaw anymore.
So Lucian had stopped waiting.
"The furrier said north," Linden said. "Past the old charcoal pits, on Blackmere land."
"Then we go north."
"You can't fly."
"I can walk." Ivor was already moving. "I can walk faster than any horse in this yard."
They left the keep at a run with the stableman and four of the Hollow's best trackers behind them.
The foxes went in fox shape, noses down.
So did Linden.
Eight white tails, fanned out behind him in the snow.
Prim's trail was easy.
A broken twig. A boot scuff, deliberate. A thread of red wool on a thorn.
