Chapter 5: The Dying Fire

The ash settled on the iron.

Ivor wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and looked at it.

There was grey on his knuckles.

"Not yet," Linden said from the doorway.

Ivor spun around.

For a second his eyes flared bright in the dark, the pupils thin as knife cuts.

Then he saw who it was, and his shoulders dropped.

"Go back to bed."

"You said not yet." Linden walked into the forge. "You said the wound had to close first."

"It does."

"Your one rule," Linden said. "Never lie. You can smell it on me. I can't smell it on you, so I have to ask. Can you burn my mark?"

Ivor looked at him for a long time.

The forge was so cold Linden could see his own breath.

He could see Ivor's, too.

It wasn't smoke anymore. It was just breath.

"No," Ivor said.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm the last one," Ivor said.

Linden waited.

"There were seven of us when I was a boy. My mother was the last queen." Ivor picked a bit of ash off his sleeve. "A dragon's fire is his life, fox. It burns down over the years unless it finds the one thing it answers to. Mine has been burning down for years. Faster since the winter."

"How fast?"

"When it goes out, I go to stone." He said it like the weather. "Grey all through. They'll put a statue at the gate and kits will climb it."

"How long?"

"The thaw, maybe. Maybe a little after."

The spring Moon Court sat on the first night of the thaw moon.

Everything Linden needed was happening on the same night.

"The road," he said. "That fire at the gate."

"Cost me about a week."

"You spent a week of your life scaring off six idiots."

"They were rude to my treasure."
