Chapter 6: Thirty Days

Linden got Prim into the kitchen and sat her by the oven.

The cook put a bowl of soup in her hands before she'd even got her bow off.

"Six riders. Masks. Torches." Prim wiped her lip and winced. "They didn't take anything. They just lit the granary and rode around it so nobody could get near."

"Who did that to your face?"

"One of them." She showed him her knuckles. They were scraped raw. "He's got a worse one."

"Prim."

"He was setting fire to our food, Linden."

Ivor came in from the gate and stopped dead.

Prim was on her feet in one move, bow off her back, arrow on the string, aimed straight at his chest.

"Back up, dragon."

Ivor looked at the arrow.

Then he looked at Linden.

"Is this one yours?"

"My sister."

"She's pointing a stick at me in my own kitchen."

"She does that."

Prim didn't lower it. "Why is my brother wearing your coat?"

"He was cold."

"Why is he in your keep?"

"He lay down on my gold and wouldn't get up."

Prim's arrow wavered.

She looked at Linden.

"You did the Hoard Law," she said slowly. "The bedtime story. You actually did it."

"It worked."

"It's real?"

"It's the oldest law there is," Ivor said, and sat down at the table and took the last honey cake. "Nobody ever reads anything."

Prim put the arrow away.

"You're smaller than they say," she said.

"You're louder than he said."

"He never mentioned me?"

"He mentioned you were twenty and thought he could fix anything."

Her face crumpled for just a second.

Then she got hold of it and turned to Linden.

"That's not even the worst part," she said. "Next morning a Blackmere herald rode in. He read it out in the square."

"Read what?"

"The clearing's moved up. We're not out at the thaw anymore. We're out the morning after the spring Moon Court." She swallowed. "By the word of the Alpha's consort, it said. Lucian."
