Chapter 27: The Unopened Letter

Dane carried the letter into the Alpha's house that night in both hands.

He stood at the end of our kitchen table with the envelope held out flat on his palms.

It was still sealed.

"I haven't opened it," he said.

Ronan looked up from his plate.

Tilly, who was eating supper with us because she had stopped waiting for invitations months ago, put down her fork.

The south sentry, beside her, put down his.

"Why not?" Ronan asked.

"Because if I read it alone, I'll answer it." Dane's voice was rough. "I always did. She writes, and I answer, and by the end of the page I'm agreeing with her."

He set the envelope down in front of me, not his brother.

"You open it, Nora. Out loud. Then nobody can say I kept anything."

I turned it over.

It was cream paper, heavy, with Celia's loop on the flap.

I hadn't seen that handwriting since I burned the deed, and my thumb went cold on it.

"Dane," I said, "you don't have to do this to prove something to me."

"I'm not proving anything. I'm scared of it."

That I understood.

I slit the flap with a butter knife and unfolded the page.

"Darling," I read. "I hear your brother has made a field hand of you. I hear you eat at the bottom of the table. Come to Blackwater. Mr. Satterfield has a place for a Hallett who knows his own worth."

My voice stayed steady, and I was proud of that.

"I cannot tell you how well I am looked after. I keep their house now, and I've never been so useful."

Tilly made a gagging noise.
