Chapter 30: Sundown

The silver cap lay in my palm for the length of a breath, and it left a red blister the size of a coin.

I wrapped it in a dish towel, put it in the pocket of my apron, and went to find the old healer.

She was on her knees in the herb beds with her trowel, and she did not look up.

"A Blackwater tooth," I said, and unwrapped it. "Silver. Who wears them?"

She looked at it for a long time.

"Wolves who fight for money," she said. "Satterfield's pit. They call them iron caps. They bite through hide with them."

"And what does it do to a wolf who gets bitten?"

She set the trowel down.

"That's a question for the Alpha."

"He told me tomorrow. It's tomorrow."

"Then he'll tell you at sundown." She picked up the trowel again. "I swore to him, child. Don't ask me to break it, because I might."

I let her be.

I didn't know what else to do.

The afternoon went by.

Hazel fed, and fussed, and slept.

I walked her up and down the porch and watched the sun go orange over the pack hall roof, and I stood at the kitchen window with my hands flat on the counter when it touched the ridge.

Ronan did not come.

The sun went down.

Tilly arrived at the door at eight, because she had a way of knowing, and found me staring at the road.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so sorry. I'll sit with the baby."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"Nora, you've been rubbing that palm for an hour."
