Chapter 30: The Plea
Colm didn't tell me not to go.
He sat up against the headboard of his grandfather's bed and waited until I'd hung up.
"You don't owe him anything," he said.
"I know."
"Do you want me there?"
"No," I said. "I want to do this one in my own face. By myself."
Then he reached over and tapped his fingers twice on my bare shoulder.
"Counting what?" I said.
"How many times you've walked into a room that frightened you," he said. "I've lost track."
The lawyer's office was on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower on Sixth Avenue.
Ryland was already sitting at the far end.
He'd lost the tan, and about ten pounds.
He stood up when I came in.
He'd never stood up for me in his life.
"Romy."
"You've got ten minutes," I said. "Your lawyer said ten."
I didn't sit.
The lawyer went out and closed the door.
Ryland looked at me across the long table.
"You look different," he said.
"I look exactly the same. You're looking."
He winced.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I'm sorry for the laptop. For Keely. For what I said on the sidewalk. For the twenty." He swallowed. "I didn't know it was you. I swear I didn't know."
