Chapter 18: The Surgeon
The specialist's office was on the ninth floor of a hospital in Chicago, and its window looked out at gray lake and a gray sky.
He was a thin man in his sixties with half-glasses, and he made me look into three machines before he said a word.
The last one was a dark box with a dot of light somewhere inside it.
"Press the button every time you see a flash," he said. "The room will be black. Don't look for them. Let them come."
The room went black.
I pressed the button when I saw one, and for a long stretch I saw none.
My thumb sat on it anyway, waiting.
When the lights came up, he was studying the printout with his mouth pursed.
"You're twenty-seven," he said.
"Yes."
"You carry the form of retinitis pigmentosa that shows up early and runs fast. Your mother lost her sight at thirty-three?"
"Yes."
"Then you know everything I'd have told you, and most of it is true. The loss will not stop on its own."
