Chapter 19: The Chicago Night

The hotel suite had nine lamps, and Phillip turned on every one before the door was shut.

He carried the last one from the bedroom and set it on the floor by the window.

The light pooled gold across the carpet and climbed the glass.

Beyond it, Chicago stood in the dark, ten thousand windows lit.

I stood in the middle of the room with my coat still on.

"I want to look at you," I said.

He stopped.

"All of you. Properly, with the lamps on, before I'm afraid to do it."

"Kira."

"Take your clothes off, Phil."

His mouth moved in something that was nearly a smile and nearly not.

He slid off his jacket and dropped it on the chair.

He unbuttoned the shirt slowly, from the top, with his eyes on my face.

I couldn't take in a whole man at once anymore.

I saw him in pieces, one lit piece at a time, and so I took them one at a time.

His collarbone, with a small old scar I didn't know.

The hard flat plane of his chest, and the dark hair that ran down it.

The ridge of each rib.

He unbuckled his belt and let his trousers fall and stood in front of me in the lamplight, thirty-one years old and hard already.

I walked around him once, slowly.

I put my palm on his shoulder blade and followed the line of his spine down to the dimples above his hips.
