Chapter 20: Board Meeting
He held the lamp up beside my face, and I saw a smear of gold in the middle of the dark and nothing around it.
By seven the sun had come over the lake and given me back a field about the size of a saucer.
It was smaller than yesterday.
Phillip didn't say a word about it.
He buttoned my coat, and he stayed on my left side all the way across the lobby of the Stannard tower.
"Fourteen chairs," he said quietly in the elevator. "A long table. The window is on the right and it's very bright."
"All right."
"Dewitt will be across from you. I'll tell you when he moves."
The boardroom doors opened at nine.
I took in the room in pieces.
A table of black wood, longer than my diner.
A row of faces, men and women in dark clothes, turned toward me.
Augustin at the head with his cane.
Halfway down the right side sat Dewitt, in a pressed suit with a cold smile.
Beside him, in a black dress with her hand on the brass ring, sat Rosalind.
She had stopped crying.
She sat up straight and looked at me.
"Ladies and gentlemen," said the oldest director, a gray woman at Augustin's elbow.
"Under the terms of the will, the heir's wife must stand beside him today."
