Chapter 8: The Record

I carried a tea tray into the library because Augustin had asked for the cook, and I was the only cook he had.

Five people were already in the room.

Augustin sat in the wingback with his hands on his cane.

Dewitt leaned on the mantel in a fresh shirt, looking pleased.

Rosalind sat in the middle of the sofa in a gray dress, with her eyes red.

Beside her sat a lawyer in a pinstripe suit with a leather folder on his knees.

Phillip stood by the window.

He did not look at me when I came in.

That hurt more than I expected.

"Pour," Augustin said, and I poured.

"Mr. Stannard," said the lawyer, clearing his throat. "My client has been wounded by certain press speculation."

"By photographs she took herself," Phillip said.

"By doubt. In order to put it to rest, we have obtained her original donor record from the Chicago eye bank."

He slid a page out of the folder and laid it on the low table.

I set down the sugar and looked, since no one had told me not to.

It was a hospital form with a blue stamp, a date seven years old, and a name typed in the donor box.

KIRA LANDRY.

Below it was a signature in blue ink, a loop and a slash.

It looked like mine.

It looked exactly like mine, and I had not signed it.

I had signed in pencil on a clipboard in a hallway, with a bandage over half my face.

"This is a forgery," I said.

Nobody heard me, because I had only said it inside my head.

"The scarring on my client's left eye was repaired afterwards by a specialist in Zurich," the lawyer said smoothly. "The records are attached."
