Chapter 10: The Lamb

I did not scream.

I closed my hand around the lamb so Poppy couldn't see the open seam.

"Lamb has a boo-boo," I said brightly. "I'm going to take him to the hospital."

"Is it a bad boo-boo?"

"It's a small one. He'll be fine."

"Can I come?"

"Not this time. Eat your cereal."

Elliot had gone very quiet at the stove.

He turned off the burner, and I saw him look at my closed hand, then my face.

"Hallway," I said.

We stood just inside my bedroom with the door half shut.

I opened my fingers.

The lamb's neck was torn open along the old stitching.

Inside the cotton sat a black lens the size of a pea, a short wire, and a flat square card with a tiny gold chip.

"That's a SIM card," Elliot said, very low.

"What does that mean?"

"It means it doesn't store anything. It sends."

I looked at the card.

My knees stopped holding me up, and I sat on the edge of the bed.

"Bree gave him to her," I said. "Two Christmases ago. She washed him every spring. She'd take him home for a day and bring him back smelling like lavender. She said it was a little tradition."

"Sadie."

"He was on the couch last night," I said. "He was right there, Elliot. He was in the next room."

Elliot's face went still.

I watched him do the math.

"Did it have power? A battery?"

I turned the lamb over and found a flat pack tucked into the stuffing at the base of the spine.
