Chapter 7: Storm Door

I texted Bree that evening: Garner says you told him I asked him to come. I didn't.

She replied before I'd put the phone down.

OMG I'm so sorry. I told him you were scared to ask him yourself. I meant it nicely! I was trying to get you two talking. I'm an idiot. Do you hate me?

I wrote back: No. But don't send him to me again.

Never. Promise. Love you.

It was a perfectly good answer.

It was also the fastest answer I'd ever gotten from her.

I put the phone face down on my mother's table and tried not to think about why that bothered me.

The storm came in after dark.

The wind took the lane first, then the porch light, and then the whole cottage went black.

I felt my way to the hall and found Poppy still asleep in my old bed, lamb under her chin.

She hadn't even stirred.

Somebody knocked on the front door.

I knew who it was before I opened it.

Elliot stood on the porch with a camping lantern in one hand and rain running off the brim of his cap.

"The whole coast is out," he said. "I wanted to make sure you had candles."

"My mother kept candles in the drawer by the stove."

"I know where she kept them."

I let him in.

He lit three in the kitchen and set the lantern on the counter, and the room went amber.

We stood on either side of the table.

Every time thunder rolled, the windows hummed.

"Thank you for today," I said. "On the lane. With the crew."
