Chapter 16: The Board
Rodrigo's POV
The boardroom of Hospital del Valle had a table for twenty and a portrait of the founder who had built it.
I sat at the far end beside Emilio, with the envelope on my knee.
Iván sat halfway down on the left, between two surgeons who had stopped looking at him.
Valeria was on the right, in her white coat, with her hands folded and her back straight.
She had not looked at me once.
The chairman, an old man with a clipped white moustache, cleared his throat.
"This is an irregular meeting. We are here because Dr. Lozano's wife has asked to address the board, and her lawyer has assured me the matter is serious."
Iván's wife stood up.
She wore a plain navy dress this time, no silver, and her hair was pulled back hard.
"Thank you," she said. "I'll be brief. Most of you know me from the Christmas dinners."
She set a thick folder on the table and opened it.
"My husband is the head of cardiac surgery. For eighteen months he has been telling me he was operating late."
Iván's mouth opened.
"Sit down, Iván," said the chairman.
"Mr. Chairman, this is a private matter, and my wife is upset..."
"Your wife has the floor."
Iván sat.
His wife turned a page.
"Eleven months of hotel bills. Seven different hotels. Each one paid on the hospital's travel card, under the heading, conference."
The room shifted.
One of the surgeons looked at his shoes.
"There was no conference," she said. "There was a woman."
She did not look toward the right side of the table, and I saw Valeria's fingers tighten on each other.
"I won't say her name. I'm not here for her. I'm here because the card is the hospital's money, and you are the people who answer for it."
